Anglers Holidays in one of Norway's Best Sea Fishing Areas
The seven cabins of Svanholmbua Anglers Holidays lies on the island Byrknesøy in the municipality Gulen at the mouth of the magnificent Sognefjord, 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Bergen. The area is a paradise for sea-fishing, diving and leisure enthusiasts, convenienty away from busy cities and tourist-traps.
This area is famous for its thousands of islands and its proximity to the open sea. The Gulf-stream makes for a mild climate, even in winter.
There are a lot of rich fishing-places among the innumerable small islands in the skerries, and the narrow straits and channels give the area its special character. There are many idyllic bays where you can ancher up your boat, take a swim and recover from dayly stress. Take 10 minutes westwards with a boat, and you are out on the North Sea, where the real big fishes of all kinds are waiting for you.
The area has many beautiful paths, ranging from easy-walks to more challenging tracks. From the peak “Veten” (200 m) you will have a terrific view over the coast, the skerries and the North Sea, in good weather conditions you even can see to the oil-platform ”Troll” in the North Sea..
Byrknesøy is a small fishing-village with approx. 500 inhabitants in the County Sogn og Fjordane, 80 kms north of Bergen. The Gulen Fiskarbondemuseum has an interesting exhibition on life in this region in former days, and subjects used by local fishermen and farmers.
The Svanholmbua vacation centre has 7 dwelling units (Norwegian: rorbu):
- Fivelstova (150 m²) has 4 bedrooms and sleeps 10 people.
- Svanholmbua 2 (115 m²) sleeps 9-10 people. It is kept in a traditional fishermen’s shanty-style. It is actually an original old boat-house - remodeled in 1997 into a high-standard rorbu.
- Svanholmbua 3 and 4 (75 m²) each has four bedrooms and sleeps 6-8 people in each cabin.
- Gardvåg Brygge 1, 2 and 3 (80 m²) each has room for 6-7 people in each cabin.
Fishing expedition with professional fisherman

Professional fisherman takes you to the best fishing areas. In the confluence of the Sognefjord and in the open sea you can catch large pollack, lump, ling, haddock, catfish, cod and other fish.
In case of rain you can sit comfortably in the cabin of the fishing boat. The friendly fisherman Rune teaches the use of long line, nets, and fish pot for lobster, crab and crayfish. The fishing boat is a speed boat of 35 feet with a 250 hp engine and room for 8-10 people.
How to find Svanholmbua
Ferry from Newcastle to Bergen (Fjordline). Or by plane to Bergen Airport, Flesland.
FjordLine has departments from Hirtshals to Bergen.
By car, 80 km: From Bergen tak E 39 northwards to Knarvik, then take RV 57 to Leirvåg. From Leirvåg take the ferry to Skipavik (about 15 minutes, hourly departures), and from Skipavik drive 16 km to Byrknesøy. You may also go by expressboat from Bergen to Mjømna and then by bus to Byrknes, or by bus all the way from Bergen.
